Do I need a primer to paint over an old pink/peach color?

I just bought my first house last week and I'm going to be painting this weekend- right now the living and bedrooms are this nasty pink/peach color, paint's probably about 10 years old or so... I want to paint white or a light neutral blue to match the white kitchen... should I use a primer since i'm painting white over pink or just buy extra white interior paint and just go over it very well? Note: i'm having friends over to paint all day Sunday- not professionals.

Do I need a primer to paint over an old pink/peach color?
yes yes yes yes.

I helped a friend paint their house and the walls were (I kid you not!) Pepto-Bismal Pink! GAG! It was awful. We bought a product called KILZ as in kills the color underneath. These rooms glowed they were so pink. The KILZ goes on really well and it did a great job covering the pink. We ended up painting several of the rooms a light sage green color and the residual pink was a great undercoat for it. We also painted a light mushroom/ecru color--very neutral. My eyes were so fried from that color tho!

Good luck with it---make sure to take before pictures---it will be such a big improvement that you'll forget how awful it looked---Jane
Reply:I would primer it.With it being that old using a primer will block out any dirt or stains that paint cannot. Also you will get better results primering.
Reply:Either... but with a primer you'll get better results.
Reply:i would not count on a primer to cover dirt. the walls need to be washed with **** and span or a product called TSP. if you use the TSP make sure you wear rubber gloves as it will eat your hands. both **** and span and TSP will take the shine off of a gloss paint so your new paint will adhere to the walls. if there are any stains on the walls then you should use a stain blocking primer. you do need to know what type of paint you are painting over, oil or latex. take a clean white cloth and some regular rubbing alcohol, if it is a latex pain the rubbing alcohol will take the paint off so you will be able to use a latex paint on top of it. if the rubbing alcohol does not take the paint off then it is an oil based paint. you have 2 choices at this point, you can either use a primer on all the walls but make sure you get one for oil based paint or you can use an oil based paint for your new color.

make sure you use good quality brushes and the right size nap roller for a professional job.

good luck.
Reply:you could use primer it's your choice or yeah you could just buy extra white. for me i'll use primer it's much easier.
Reply:Yes, primer first. The color is not the issue:

Primer because unsure of previous type of paint: certain types of paints will not adhere to other types of paint. Primer first will assure you that the fresh paint will not peel.

Primer because of paint's age: There is 10 years of dust/grime on the old paint. Primer will assure you that the dirty paint won't interfere with your new coat of paint.
