How to dye a canopy net made out of polyester?its called ivory but looks like peach?

its a canopy net that hangs over my bed ,but i dont like the color and the company says they dont have any thing near my color i need like lite tan or off white somthing to match my palm tree bedding they had ivory wich looked off white by the photo but turned out more like peach hen it came.so im trying to dye it but its made out of 100 polyester can some one help me on a company that sells that type of dye and how to do it please!and thank you

i have never had any luck dyeing polyester, but check out this website for dylon dye. they may have the answer you need. you can probably email or phone their customer service.

Reply:Polyester can only be dyed with a special polyester dye called disperse dye. You cannot dye polyester with the same dyes you would use on a natural fiber or on hair, because they simply will not stick to polyester. Rit dye won't work, Procion dye won't work, Dylon dye won't work. You must boil your polyester for an hour in disperse dye.





To buy disperse dye, you must mail-order from a good dye supplier. In the US, order disperse dye from PRO Chemical %26amp; Dye in Massachusetts, or Aljo Mfg. in New York, or try the new "iDye Poly" being sold by Dharma Trading Company (avoid the all-purpose dye "iDye" without the "Poly" in the name, because only the "Poly" version of "iDye" will work on polyester). In Australia, order disperse dye from The Thread Studio, KraftKolour or Batik Oetoro. In the UK and Europe, order disperse dye from Omega Dyes, Rainbow Silks, or other companies listed on the page "Sources for Dyeing Supplies Around the World" as having disperse or transfer dye.





You can also use a good fabric paint, instead of dye. Jacquard brand fabric paints, such as Dye-Na-Flow or Neopaque, will stick to synthetic fibers such as polyester, in addition to natural fibers. Dye-Na-Flow will have the least adverse effect of any fabric paint on the texture of your net, especially if you dilute it with one-third part water before use, although, unlike dye, all fabric paints will make the netting a little bit less soft to the touch than before.





If you return your peach-colored netting for some white, it will be easier to color it tan. You can color polyester a light tan by boiling it for an hour in strong coffee, of all things. The advantage of this is that you can use your best large cooking pot to do it. You must not use your best cooking pot for disperse dyes or any other commercial dyes, because it is not food safe. (Never reuse a dyepot for food!) The disadvantage is that the color will tend to wash out, after a few launderings, but this may not be an issue for you if you do not wash your canopy net very often. Also, there will be a lingering odor of coffee.
